Horta
Belgian architect Victor Horta was widely celebrated during his lifetime, but when he died in 1947 his elaborate art nouveau style was already regarded as old-fashioned and as the modernist view took hold, many of his buildings were torn down. The Maison Du Peuple was demolished in 1965 and its grand steel arcs ended up facing the elements on the scrap heap. Fortunately, these at least were rescued and incorporated in the design of the magnificent Grand Café Horta, which you will find next to the main Antwerp theatre and where you can go for an excellent dinner or for a quick drink.
