Rodin: Balzac, the story of a masterpiece
The sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and the writer Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), who both played pivotal roles in their time, are united in one sculpture, 'Balzac' by Rodin. The impressive open air Middelheim museum has the sculpture in its collection, and has now organised a tribute to this portrait of an artist, once rebuked by society, now admired as a key work in modern sculpture. The exhibition offers a unique insight into the procedures of a great artist: his search for the right form, his handling of the matter, his search for balance between perfectionism and poetry. But it also devotes quite some attention to the sculpture's final form. And while you're there, take a good walk through the sculpture park, it's one of the quietest places you can get in Antwerp.
