“9th October" celebrations in Valencia
On 9th October, Valencia commemorates the entry into the city of James I of Aragon in 1238 and celebrates the Valencia Regional Day and Saint Denis' day, which is dedicated to love and affection. The acts held during the day include a solemn civil procession in homage to the la Real Senyera (the city’s flag), a mascletà, a ‘Dançà Popular’ combining traditional dances and Valencian music in La Plaza de la Virgen and the re-enacting of the entry of Moor and Christian troops into the city, before finishing with a firework display. The city’s lovers, meanwhile, will participate in the traditional “mocadorà”, which consists of presenting a loved one with a gift of traditional marzipan sweets wrapped in a silk scarf.
