Alberto Giacometti - The Art of Seeing
Alberto Giacometti - The Art of Seeing: Exhibition at Kunsthaus Zürich
Seeing is the basis of all visual art, and no artist has focused so centrally on the process of seeing as Alberto Giacometti (1901 - 1966). And although seeing is itself of course invisible, yet by reflecting and experimenting Giacometti was able to render its psychological presence palpable in his work.
In his early Surrealist phase he was already addressing sight emblematically as a central theme, in its oscillation between Eros and Thanatos, while his mature work exposes an inner sanctum of the imagination in which the phenomenon of perception is investigated. And finally, the ceaselessly circling regard inscribed by Giacometti on his art and performed by the observer demonstrates the proposition that being alive is mainly a matter of seeing, that life is manifest in the eyes.
Event starts March 11, 2011 and ends May 22, 2011
