Valencia celebrates its big day
On 9 October, Valencia will hold two celebrations: the Day of the Community of Valencia, when the city commemorates the entry of King James I of Aragon into Valencia in 1238, and the feast day of Saint Denis, the day for Valencian lovers. The festivities begin on the 8th, with a concert given by the Valencia Orchestra in the Palau de la Música and a fireworks display at the Paseo de la Alameda, next to the Puente de la Exposición. There will be several events on the 9th, including the people’s procession to pay homage la Senyera, the regional flag, culminating in a traditional Valencian mascletà fireworks display in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Lovers give each other a mocaorà, a handkerchief containing a piruleta and a tronaor, marzipan sweets that are traditional on this day.
