Brabo statue
On the Grote Markt, in the very heart of the historical center of Antwerp, you will find a statue of a scantily clad youth who is about to throw something that looks unsettingly like a hand. The bad news is that it is. The good news: it's only a legend. The story has it that in the distant past the river Scheldt was terrorised by Druon Antigoon, a giant. A brave Roman centurion called Silvius Brabo -our nudist- challenged the ogre, defeated him and chopped off his hand for good measure. The latter became something of a patron saint of Antwerp and that's why you can now see him pitching on the Grote Markt
