Boerentoren
Measuring 97 meters, the Boerentoren (farmers' tower) is the second tallest building in Antwerp (after the Cathedral of Our Lady) and it was the first skyscraper on the European continent. The building was completed in 1931, turned out to be a highlight of art deco architecture and now stands proudly in the heart of the city, a landmark for tourists and locals alike. A few years ago, the Boerentoren caused commotion when a huge red letter 'A' -created by fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck- was put on top of the building. Some people were horrified, others loved it. Eventually -under a lot of protest- the sign was taken down again, but it now lives on as Antwerp's logo and as such, it has become a huge success.Â
