De Single
Probably one the most best-known modernist building in Antwerp. The construction work on the building started in 1964 and finished 20 years later. The architect Leon Stynen had an urban vision for the area but only "De Singel" was completed. The building is a cultural complex and houses The Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music and the Architecture Institute. The building shape and layout are a combination of volumes of varying heights, airy halls and bright corridors overlooking an inner courtyard. An extension designed by Stéphane Beel is expected to be completed by 2010.
