In days gone by courtyards served as welfare housing for the elderly. Nowadays they are primary oases of tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. The most famous courtyard of Amsterdam is the Begijnhof, which dates back to the 15th century and is located near the busy Kalverstraat. Approximately 25 courtyards can also be found in the Jordaan district. These are still occupied and often accessible to visitors who respect the need for resident's privacy. A map with descriptions of all the courtyards can be downloaded at www.jordaanweb.nl.
