St Andrew's Church

This church, founded by Augustine monks (who, by the way, sympathised with Martin Luther) and sanctified in 1529, suffered severely from the iconoclast period and the French Revolution but was aptly restored with respect to its late-gothic building style. Highlights are the baroque 17th century high altar, a superb 1821 pulpit and a unique reliquary. Despite its monumental air, the church was once called the "˜chapel of misery', due the poor folk who surrounded it. (Nowadays, however, Sint-Andries quarter has become more fashionable, with most of Antwerp's famous fashion highlights just around the corner.) The church is open to visitors on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but between the 15th of April and the 31st of October .
